The North West Music Festival 2011

  North West Youth Brass Band

launches in style

On Thursday past, the North West Youth brass band took to the stage for the first time.  Playing to a near capacity audience, the band gave an exhibition of brass playing that thrilled and excited those in attendance.  Taking part in their inaugural performance it was a memorable and enjoyable experience for all involved.

With the North West Youth brass band announcing itself on the local scene, it is believed that the band will add to the already rich and deep tradition of brass music in the region.

Huw Edwards, Musical Director commented,

“It was a hugely memorable night and one that lays the foundation for exciting times ahead.  It’s fantastic to get to this stage and we are looking forward to performing again in the weeks, months and years ahead.

“The first performance will always be a heavily anticipated and somewhat nervous occasion, however the team came together very well, they played their hearts out and did themselves very proud indeed.

“Speaking to members of the audience afterwards, I get the impression that they were also greatly impressed with what they heard.  It’s a huge confidence booster for all involved”.

The vision of the North West Youth brass band, has always been about the bringing together of young musicians to represent the area, regardless of tradition.  It is an opportunity to be acknowledged and celebrated for musical talent and endeavours.

Thomas Bonner, band member said

“In the same way other young people love playing sports or performing in drama, I love playing brass music, it’s a great pass time and teaches you new life skills.  The youth brass band is great and I’m very thankful just to be involved.  I’m looking forward to continue practicing hard and playing again with the band.”

The cross-community initiative will add to the already glowing CV that the North West enjoys within the Northern Ireland Brass Band fraternity.  It is hoped the Youth Brass Band will not only be an ambassador when representing the area, but it will also be an opportunity and a platform for the young musicians to showcase their talents.

This project is widely seen as one of the biggest opportunities for the development of brass music in recent years.  This kind of financial injection into the local brass music  scene will add to the already rich tradition of the music in the area, but more importantly, it will help brass music become more appealing to children and young people, and will help secure the future of brass music in the North West.

Thomas Barr, Programme Director

“I cant highlight enough the importance of this performance, we have spent the best part of 12 months pulling this project together and to see the band take to the stage for the first time will be a proud moment.

“I want to urge everyone to come along, enjoy a sensational night of music and show their support for the band.  The vision of this band has always been to bring the top young musicians together, regardless of tradition or location, in a way to keep alive and maintain this regions status, for creating top brass music.

“Id like to pay a special thank you to Peace III and the Strabane District council who have backed this project from day one, I have no doubt, that without their assistance and support, this youth brass band would not have been created.

“We look forward to announcing the bands next performance

North West Music Festival

adds to reputation

The Alley came alive for three days of thrilling music performances, competitions and workshops, highlighting the very best in brass talent not only within Strabane and the North West, but across Northern Ireland.  A total of approximately 600 musicians representing 17 brass bands made the trip to the North West to compete in the Brass Band league of Northern Ireland.  It’s the third successive year that the prestigious event has been held in the Award winning venue in Strabane.

On a sunny spring day, the sight of the many different band uniforms loitering around the Alley Theatre, gave a positive visual to the atmosphere that was generated in Strabane.  It also gives a flavour of the feel good factor that a festival of this nature can bring to the area.

Thomas Barr, Festival Director said

The festival is going from strength to strength, to have the continued support from local people makes it easy to put this festival on.  This is the third year in a row that the Brass Band League of Northern Ireland has held its main event in Strabane – I can honestly say that each year the feedback we receive from our visitors gets better and better.

“Once again, it has been a frantic but enjoyable week – with the Inaugural performance of the North West Youth Brass Band kicking the weekend’s activities off.  A huge thank you has to go the all who support the festival, in terms of volunteers, sponsors, the Strabane District council, the Alley Theatre staff and of course local people.  For the 600 plus people who visit Strabane for the competition, I think all left with a very positive experience.

The competition started at 10 a.m and did not finish until 6 p.m, with packed audiences throughout the day enjoying some of the very best in brass band music in the UK and Ireland on show.

John Kerr, Alley Theatre Manager stated.
"The North West Music Festival has been an amazing success year on year and we look forward to welcoming the North West Festival Committee back again next year.  This event highlights that Strabane has something to offer in terms of the culture and arts.  It’s a hugely positive advertisement for the Strabane area.

“The Alley Theatre was designed for occasions such as this, it’s an event all the staff look forward to.  We have watched it grow into a permanent fixture on our event listings and we will continue to support the festival committee in the years ahead

After months of intense preparations and dedicated rehearsing, the North West Youth Brass Band is ready to take to the stage for their inaugural performance.  The band, made up of top young musicians from all over the North West region will take centre stage at the Alley Theatre to launch, what is hoped will be the first of many showpiece events.  The Youth Brass band initiative has, from the outset been fully supported by Cultural Heritage and Identity programme which is funded through PEACE III.

Outlining the significance of this performance, Programme Director Tommy Barr said,

“I cant highlight enough the importance of this performance, we have spent the best part of 12 months pulling this project together and to see the band take to the stage for the first time will be a proud moment.

“I want to urge everyone to come along, enjoy an exhibition performance of brass music and show their support for the band.

“The young members are really excited about their first performance as a band – I hope we can get a full house to get us of to a great start.”

Huw Edwards, Musical Director went on to say

“This kind of project does not happen every day and I have tried to impress this on the young players.  I’m as thrilled to be part of this band as they are – I can see the potential this has for them, as individuals, but on a grander scale, this band has the potential to promote and represent the North West as a region throughout Ireland the UK and beyond.  This is a huge opportunity and one that should not be understated.

“When I was approached about the position, I had no hesitation in taking it – I have long standing friendships with the people of this area, and I understand and share their passion, dedication and appetite for brass music – I’m pleased to say that those traits are very much present in the next generation of brass players.

“I’m proud to be part of this unique project and I’m confident we can put on a proper show for the people who come out to hear the inaugural performance – I can guarantee, you won’t be disappointed.  I hope we can all get to a point in the future that we fondly look back, and remember the first performance and were it all started for the North West Youth Brass Band was in Strabane.”

The Youth Brass band will take to the Alley Theatre stage on Thursday 31st March at 7:30pm for a exhibition performance with free admission.  To mark the occasion a complimentary drinks reception will be taking place in the Alley exhibition space prior to the performance.  An open invitation has been issued with a first come first served policy.

North West Youth Brass Band blows the

right note

The North West Youth Brass Band took a historical step on Sunday (27th February 2011) as it hosted its open rehearsal.  The open rehearsal was the opportunity for young musicians from all over the region, to perform in front of the band conductor Huw Thomas and stake a claim to their position in the band.  Players from Omagh, Fermanagh, Derry/Londonderry and Strabane attended the rehearsal in the hope of being part of this unique project.

The rehearsal, which was held in St.Patricks hall, in Strabane and was attended by upwards of 40 young musicians – who played their hearts out for the right to be part of the inaugural 25 member band.  The band will emabark on a musical journey which will see them perform at competitions and events the length and breadth of the country, it will also give the young musicians the opportunity to perform on a local, national and international stage.  The band will represent the North West when it takes part in a Scandinavian tour in 2013.

Huw Thomas, Musical Director stated

“I was very impressed with the standard of the talent on show today – and I was even more impressed with the enthusiasm for brass music in the area. It’s refreshing to see that brass music is alive and well.  I had an idea that I would be in for a difficult day in selecting the band members, that certainly turned out to be the case. However I’m happy that the correct musicians have been chose and I’m looking forward to getting the band together and preparing for our first performance.

“After the months of administration and paperwork in pulling this project together, it feels great to finally get in front of the players and start bringing this project to life.  I feel honoured to be part of this band and great credit must go to Thomas Barr for the vision and drive that he has demonstrated in getting us to this stage.”

This kind of financial injection into the local brass music will scene will add to the already rich tradition of the music in the area, but more importantly, it will help brass music become more appealing to children and young people, and will help secure the future of brass music in the North West.

Thomas Barr, Programme Director said

“The band will be owned by the people of the North West – I’d encourage everyone to play their part in the success of the band, whether through volunteering or following the progress of the band through supporting it.  Id like to see family members, brass practitioners and the general public get fully behind the project for the good of the music.

“Under Huw’s conducting and with the help of locally sourced aides, I’m positive that we have enough experience and expertise within the management team to give this band every opportunity to reach its potential.

“I generally believe that today is a momentous day in the life of the North West Youth Brass Band – and we now concentrate all our effort to ensuring that the bands inaugural performance at the North West Music Festival on April 2nd will be another memorable occasion.

“A huge thanks to everyone who has helped to this point.”

The North West Music Festival Launches Spectacularly at Stormont.

Last week the North West Music Festival, supported by Strabane District Council, the CONNECT project and MK Audio, launched its augural year in spectacular style. No setting seemed more appropriate than the lavish Great Hall of parliament building, Stormont. In years gone by, this setting has seen many an historic event, such as the George Best Funeral, Devolution Day and as recent as last year, The World Rally Championship. It seems fitting that the crème de la crème of North West musical talent shone brightly on an evening of sublime music that would be fitting for any world stage.

A 150 strong contingent from the North West traveled to Stormont to witness and be a part of this historical event. The guests were treated to a guided tour of the symbolic building, before taking their seats below the marble staircase to watch history unfold. The enthralling event got under way with greetings from Culture, Arts and Leisure committee member, Francis Brown MLA, and the festival Communications Manager, Brendan Gallagher- "The three acts you will see tonight are all great ambassadors for the North West, and will give a flavour of what can be expected in Strabane over the festival weekend."

The guests were treated to musical scores from The God Father, Pirates of the Caribbean and a delicious rendition of The Muppet Show.  St. Joseph’s concluded their set by inviting the Bready Ulster-Scots Pipe Band, with whom they have been working with since 2004, to accompany them with their final piece, 'Highland Cathedral'. Festival Chairman and St Joseph’s spokesman Tommy Barr commented, “It was an honour for the band to play at Stormont and it will be an event that lasts long in the memory. We have set ourselves a high standard tonight, which we will aim to achieve again when we take to the stage at The Alley Theatre on April 2nd!"

The second act to take centre stage was the delightful Rois Kelly. Rois was North West Music Festival organisers prepare for the Stormont gigsupported by Ronan McCullagh on guitar and Aine Nugent on violin.   Singer/songwriter Rois wowed the Stormont audience with a beautiful set of music which ranged from the artists own original music to a sublime course of Jeff Buckley's critically acclaimed Hallelujah. Rois - always a very popular and well supported vocal artist in the region - was delighted to return to perform in the Great Hall. Last year her amazing vocal range took centre stage at the annual St. Patrick's Day Celebrations at Stormont. Rois went on to say, "I was delighted to be approached to be a part of the festival and to have the opportunity to once again play at Stormont. This was a huge occasion when our own musical talents were the highlight of the evening. The festival will go a long way to promote local talent."

The evening was brought to a close by native of Sion Mills and celebrated Irish Composer, Brendan Breslin. Brendan, now living in Dublin, raised the tempo of the evening by introducing jazz and swing to the proceedings. Brendan brought 15 musicians from across Ireland to perform a foot tapping extravaganza. Brendan, having already graced some of the world's biggest stages, now has added Stormont to that ever growing list.
